Harmonie State Park was established in 1966, but its roots trace back to the early 19th century. The park is named after the nearby town of New Harmony, which was founded in 1814 by the Harmony Society, a group of German immigrants led by George Rapp. This community sought to create a utopian society based on communal living and religious principles. Though the original Harmony Society moved to Pennsylvania in 1824, the town of New Harmony continued to thrive as a center for education and social reform under the leadership of Robert Owen, a Welsh industrialist and social reformer.

The park itself encompasses over 3,465 acres of pristine woodlands, rolling hills, and picturesque landscapes along the Wabash River. It was developed to preserve the natural beauty of the area and provide a space for public recreation and enjoyment.
